Visual communication has been a life-long dream of mine. I decided I wanted to “make the drawings in the textbooks” around age 12. It’s been a long road of intensive study, but it’s my passion. I strive to illuminate the incredible world of science through the universal language of art.
My first step was a simple newspaper ad. I mailed in my submission for the famous “Draw Me” challenge and was recruited by Art Instruction Schools Inc. after reaching their minimum age of 14. I entered their annual art competition several times over the years, working my way up from honorable mention, to second place, to grand prize winner.
I went on to major in studio art and minor in art history and biology. Immunology, microbiology, and experimental drawing techniques were among my favorite classes. During my undergraduate time, I was featured in juried exhibitions and put on a solo art show about wildlife conservation. I went on to earn a master of science degree in medical illustration, taking human anatomy and physiology with dissection alongside medical students. Time was even spent in the operating room observing and sketching surgical procedures. I studied both traditional and digital multimedia techniques and became an expert visual storyteller.
I now create digital content for the U.S. government as my day job and work with freelance clients in my off time to solve their various visual communication challenges as a Certified Medical Illustrator. I also have an Etsy shop where I create custom pet portraits and cartoon caricatures.
